Our Normal Kids Need Unique Prayer

Credit: New York Public Library Digital Collections
My children and all my grandchildren are the kids of a pastor. They are regular children with typical problems. However, I know that some of the hurdles they face are unique to those brought up in the manse or parsonage.

A man who is the son of a pastor, Barnabas Piper, agrees that a PK is a normal child but with particular struggles. In an August 1, 2015 Tabletalk Magazine article, Piper wrote, "...when you put normal people in uniquely challenging circumstances, things get difficult, and growing up in a family wherein the father’s vocation is full-time ministry is definitely uniquely difficult."

In his article called "Praying for Pastors' Kids," Piper writes that PKs need prayer as they navigate this life. The five specific prayer requests that he gives could be used by pastors' wives as they pray for their children. And, the ideas can inform the prayers of church members who ask, "How may I pray for you and your family?" The requests all center on the importance of Jesus, family, love and grace.

Find Barnabas Piper's "Praying for Pastors' Kids" on the Ligonier Ministries' website.

Hebrews 4:16 "Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need."

  1. As the mom to PKs, I hope the people in my church pray these things for my kids. As a PK myself, I'm quite sure there are many who did this for me.

    1. Yes, Megan, There were many. Probably some we are not aware of. I just got a note from a woman who said she was praying for me, and I never guessed that she ministered to me in that way.

  3. This and the article actually made me weep. I am a pastor's wife in the OPC (sister denomination) and we have four children (ages 9,6,6,3). I forwarded this to the people I know who pray for my children and family. Thank you.
